Top Things To See And Do In Detroit
Here are a few of the most visited attractions and activities in Detroit that might be of interest to you:
Detroit Institute of Arts
The building which today houses the Detroit Institute of Arts was constructed in 1885. However, the museum was established later, in 1927. Statues, sculptures, paintings – everything can be discovered at this museum. Detroit Institute of Arts contains over 100 collections totaling a number of 65,000 artworks. You’ll be able to find not only American art, but also European, Asian and African objects. This museum is considered to be one of the most comprehensive art museums in America. Detroit Institute of Arts is opened from Tuesday to Sunday between 10:00 AM and 5:00 PM; on Friday it closes its doors at 10:00 PM.
Comerica Park
Comerica Park is a large stadium in Detroit which serves as home ground for Detroit Tigers: a major team in American Baseball League. The museum broke ground in 1997 and only 3 years later it was officially opened. With a capacity of more than 40,000 seats, this stadium offers an impressive experience, whether you like baseball or not. Try making your way to the stadium when the baseball league is underway, because you’ll be amazed by the atmosphere created. Alternatively you can opt for a stadium tour in company of a guide for only a few dollars.
Old St. Mary’s Church
This church was designed and built in 1800s by a German architect. The Romanesque-Venetian style influences can be noticed in the entire construction. It is currently located in the Greektown historical district of the city. The twin towers at the main entrance measure approximately 90 feet (28 meters). At this moment the church is opened daily for visitors, but unfortunately not many religious ceremonies are held there. However, several times a year, Old St. Mary’s Church is the host of some important religious events. The entry to this church is free for all the visitors. The church is opened daily between 9:00 AM and 6:00 PM.
Detroit Symphony
The exterior of Detroit Symphony might seem like a 21st century structure, but this building has been constructed in 1887. Here you’ll have the chance to see the Detroit symphony orchestra at work. The hall has a capacity of more than 1,000 seats. Usually there are concerts even three times a week and the hall can get pretty crowded, so get tickets as early as possible. There’s also a specially designed parking lot where you can safely park the car for as little as $7. The ticket price depends on the importance of the concert so the best thing you can do is check the official website for further details.
Mexican town
In the southwest side of Detroit you can find a bit of a Mexican community. The area is not large but it still includes several restaurants, shops and even one high-school. If you never tried Mexican food before then you should definitely do it now. At the shops you can find items like sombreros and dolls which are used at voodoo rituals. Of course that there is no admission fee when entering in this part of the city, and there is no closing hour as well. However, some restaurants close their doors before 7:00 PM so go there as early as possible.
